Why Data Storytelling is Important

Data storytelling is a powerful tool that can help businesses and organizations communicate useful data insights to people with different levels of technical knowledge. Its main use is in creating informative and compelling stories, powered by data and visualizations in order to take better decisions. It's about transforming data into something useful and engaging.

The two main component of successful data storytelling are :1. The message should be clear and concise, interesting and not too technical 2. The data should be presented in a way that is easy to understand and visually appealing.

Quick Example – Sports Analytics

Say we had a table with shot data for a soccer match. We have access to shot location, quality of the shot (xG) and the result: goal or no goal. How could we transform this table into useful information that is easy to understand?

We will build our own custom visualization based on this data table!

If we want to look at the different scoring opportunities a team had during a match, we can create a visualization with all shots, represented here by hexagons (where the size of the hexagon represents the quality of the shot and goals are coloured in dark blue).

For example, we can see that many low-value shots were taken. Perhaps tactical adjustments are needed!

Conclusion

Transforming data into simple and clear visualizations allows for better decision-making while being able to easily share insights with a non-technical audience.
